Explore this strange universe that unfolds within the protagonist's mind, existing in four spatial dimensions (X, Y, Z and W). It blends a surreal world reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland with games like Manifold Garden and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Alice in the Geometric Labyrinth is an Adventure RPG featuring 4D puzzles and platforming elements. The protagonist, Alice Takahashi, aims to reach the exit: a giant umbrella-shaped tower that will bring her back home, emanating a beam of light into the sky.
Her main obstacle is that, being a 3D entity, she can only perceive a "slice" of the 4D world. To counteract this, she has:
- Akihiro's diaries: documents left by a character who dedicated himself to recording everything he discovered in this world.
- A 4D sword: capable of damaging enemies outside her 3D "slice".
- A bow: for ranged attacks against enemies within her current "slice".
- Mirrors: allowing Alice to move through different slices. When she travels through them, everything seems to shift place. Intriguingly, the reflections Alice sees are versions of herself at different stages of life, sometimes younger and sometimes older.
The music of this album represents the Forgotten Woods area, a place where:
- Trees appear to have discontinuous branches, like dotted lines that appear and disappear.
- The sky is fragmented like shattered glass, each piece showing a different time of day and year.
- Enemies seem to materialize and vanish into thin air.
- There are random floating hypercubes and jellyfish that appear and disappear.
The boss of this region is the Automaton Puppeteer, a summoner-type enemy that will bring forth creatures whose strings we must use to damage it.
Description of entry:
- Genre: hybrid orchestra (inspired by games and anime)
- Runtime: 4 days
- Software: Reaper for composing and arranging, and Studio One for mixing and mastering. I used libraries from both Spitfire Audio (BBC SO Core and Studio Woodwinds) and Native Instruments, as well as synthesizers like Vital and NES VST.
- Inspirations for the music: Sonic, Pokémon, Hollow Knight, Touhou Project and anime music in general.
- Inspirations for the story and the "game": World's End Umbrella, Alice in Wonderland, Infinity Train, Alice: Madness Returns, Manifold Garden and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Process: First, I created the story (based on one that I had before). Second, I searched for possible references. Later, I started composing a leitmotif and used it to create a piano sketch of all songs. After that, I arranged it with my instrument libraries and designed sounds with synthesizers. Thereafter, I sent the tracks to Adiel Pérez and he mixed and mastered them.
Chosen theme: I used the phrase "inside my world" to create the story on which I based the music.
Permissions: You can use the music for non-commercial purposes with attribution.
